This fascinating project brings together four extremely versatile musicians and all 70 known pieces of Monk magic, from the much-celebrated to the obscurity of a tune originally credited to Sonny Clark. I hesitate to use the word ‘compositions’ because, for the most part, they are actually ‘blowing vehicles’ of a particularly sophisticated kind, and at least three of them are blues riffs originally tossed off during Monk’s unaccompanied recording sessions. The majority of the tracks are relatively straightahead quartet performances, but there are a couple of solo piano pieces, while ‘’Round Midnight’ and ‘Blue Monk’ are both initially enunciated by Reid. Kimbrough pulls off the hard task of using many of the master’s voicings and approaches to single-line improv, without being inhibited in creating his own interpretations. Robinson’s choice of instruments (not only reeds, but trumpet and cornet) is based on what he deems most suitable for each piece, and his soloing covers the distance between a close approximation of Charlie Rouse (e.g. on ‘Jackie-ing’) and occasional avant-garde touches. The relative concision of these tracks help make the whole five-and-a-half-hours running-time a delight.
