For lovers of bossa nova, the 1967 studio album Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim is an album that has long been absorbed into the fine print of their consciousness. With seven of its 10 songs clocking in at under three minutes, and no song troubling the four-minute mark, the disc's true appeal lies in its supreme subtlety and understatement, both in terms of Claus Ogerman's gossamer-light arrangements and Sinatra's telling restraint. Featuring Jobim on guitar and backing vocals, nothing seems forced, the music unfolding with an unhurried grace. Quoted in the CD booklet notes, Sinatra joked: “I haven't sung so soft since I had the laryngitis.” Alongside seven Jobim classics, including ‘The Girl from Ipanema’, ‘Dindi’ and ‘Quiet Nights’, the album also features bossa arrangements of three Great American Songbook standards: ‘Change Partners’, ‘I Concentrate on You’, and ‘Baubles, Bangles and Beads’. At the Grammy Awards in 1968, the album was nominated for Album of the Year, but lost out to The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper. This expanded 50th anniversary edition includes a brace of bonus tracks, a Sinatra/Jobim medley from the TV special A Man and His Music + Ella + Jobim, and a previously unreleased studio take of ‘The Girl from Ipanema’.
