When the Gary Burton Quartet with Larry Coryell appeared at Berlin Jazz Days in November 1967, they may have been the hit of the festival, but they also made a huge impact on West German musicians, who, given the green light to mix jazz and rock, were quick out of the blocks.

Among the front runners was the vibist Dave Pike, an ex-pat American, with a German quartet, including Volker Kriegel on guitar, that did the Burton thing at 500mph. Kriegel quickly graduated to become one of the stars of German jazz scene until his death in 2003.

Gone but not forgotten, this tribute to Kriegel's highly original art has been split between three guitarists – Frankfurt's John Schröder, Thelonious Monk prize winner Jesse van Ruller, and the regular Frankfurt Radio Big Band guitarist Martin Scales. They perfectly complement each other and honour Kriegel in (excellent) 500mph solos, while some of the section writing for the trumpets is, well, breathtaking in its complexity. This is jazz-rock writ large, but written and played with honesty and conviction. Highlights include ‘Lift!’, ‘Mild Manic’ and Kriegel's intriguingly titled, ‘Piece With a Chord From a Yorkshire Terrier’. Ha!
