Recorded live in a small, acoustically resonant Catskills church during the 2014 Windham Chamber Music Festival, this tenth solo release confirms Fred Hersch as one of the most engagingly lyrical piano performers of the current age. In an opening one-two that encapsulates the Cincinnatiborn and raised musician's impressive range, he kicks off here with a medley of Jobim's ‘Olha Maria’ and ‘Grande Amor’ followed by ‘Pastorale’, a homage to Robert Schumann which evokes a country dance on a warm summer's evening. Hersch is well established as a duo, trio and chamberensemble performer, but he really shines here in the solo spotlight in a recital released as he goes into his 60th year. Thelonious Monk's ‘In Walked Bud’ and Jerome Kern's ‘The Song Is You’ serve as the basis for some graceful, lyrical flights of fancy before the set closes with a charmingly tender take on Joni Mitchell's ‘Both Sides Now’.
