Freddie Gavita is a trumpeter/flugelhornist who's been turning heads as a member of Ronnie Scott's quintet and orchestra as well as in the John Dankworth and National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Meanwhile he's spent some time developing his composition skills leading this quartet before releasing his debut Transient. There's a dance element to his music that nods to the convivial post-bop tradition: a twist on the Afro-Cuban vamp occurs on the hard-bopping ‘Strimming the Ham’; the Miles-ish free bop of ‘Lion-O’ through to the Nat Adderly-ish gospel-tinged ‘The Buffalo Trace’ and the folky eastern melody on ‘Iverson Oddity’. It's a very promising start.
