For what originally started out as a small two-man operation, Blue Note discovered mainly relatively unknown talent and in many instances elevated them into internationally revered musicians. Most notably trumpet players such as Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, Kenny Dorham, Donald Byrd, Blue Mitchell and the truly great Freddie Hubbard, whose impressive 1960 label debut Open Sesame pairs this 22-year-old with the truly marvellous tenor sax skills of Tina Brooks and pianist McCoy Tyner. Indeed, Open Sesame stands as one the finest debuts the label unleashed on the public. No argument, young Freddie had it on all fronts: fluency, tone and a technique which afforded him total commend of his instrument. Not one to endorse other musicians' attributes, Miles once went as far as to state that (apart from himself), Hubbard was then top dog with no immediate rivals. Few discs have made such an impact as Open Sesame. On subsequent albums included on this double CD (Goin' Up, Hub-Tones and Ready For Freddie) his frontline partners are Hank Mobley, Wayne Shorter and the somewhat overlooked James Spaulding. So no time to waste, grab yourself a copy.
