OK, it's a pain that three old vinyl releases get broken up as they're shoehorned across two CDs, while the fab original CTI artwork is reduced to a thumbnail. But, for value for money, BGO's anthologies are hard to beat, especially for those new to the music. And what great music this is: Hubbard's debut threesome for CTI, capturing him hot, funky and free and before stardom and commercial exigency mellowed that unique sound. Throw in Creed Taylor's production and Van Gelder's engineering and these recordings are special. Of course Hubbard's hard bop fans will rage against this reading, but there's enough straightahead blowing here to allay even the hardest bopper. But it's the richer context, the response to Miles' electric experience, the ear for contemporary song (a bonus track is a take on Lennon's ‘Cold Turkey’ from the Red Clay session) and the magic between this group of stellar musicians (of which only White was among Hubbard's road band), which makes this music fresh, challenging and eminently danceable. Got a problem with that?
