Ferrandini, Faustino and Sousa are all vital players on Lisbon's impressive free-jazz scene, but these cuts see them each temper their usual frenzy with a set of smoky, but never smooth, sessions recorded during a one-year residency at the Portuguese capital's ZDB venue. Ferrandini's embryonic notations – each named after a Lisbon street – are given their gentle flesh by his trusted co-conspirators, his own sensitive playing beautifully restrained and full of Motian-like expressionism. Saxophonist Sousa is on typically scintillating form, igniting the smouldering fires of dim lust with his raspy, crackling (occasionally crotchety) slow-burning tones, as Faustino's mantle of bowed strings coax the shifting embers of a creeping licentiousness. Like a chaste blonde in a pre-Code picture, Volúpias sometimes seeks its love in the wrong places, but with a tenderness and affection for jazz's oldest flames, resuscitating sepia forms with off-the-cuff, of-the-moment flights and an unquenchable zeal for exploration, whatever the intensity.
