Originally from Burnley, Lancashire, bassist Gary Brunton has distinguished himself on the Paris jazz scene after studying at Le CIM – L’Ecole de Jazz et Musiques Actuelles – and the Paris Conservatoire. Bojan Zulfikarpašić (Bojan Z) was a fellow student at Le CIM, and Night Bus renews their musical relationship, the title taken from their student days when they jammed late into the night in Paris jazz clubs and took the Noctilien (the Paris night bus) home in the small hours. Bojan Z made a considerable impression when he emerged from Henri Texier’s band in the late 1990s, debuting as a leader in his own right on the Label Bleu label with albums such as Yopla! (1995) and Koreni (1998) with compositions incorporating folkloric and rhythmic elements from his native Balkans. Here he works out on Brunton’s compositions which reveal a more thoughtful side of his musical persona on numbers such as ‘Ready for Riga’, ‘Nobody’s Perfect’, ‘One Afternoon’ or ‘Back Home’. This is a very accomplished trio, limited to a certain extent by the material at hand, perhaps, because the compositions are not necessarily framed to take advantage of BZ’s potential, but this in itself suggests an area that might be profitably explored in the future.
