In addition to being outstanding tenor saxophonists, both George Garzone and Jerry Bergonzi are highly respected educators and teachers. This record appears to have been sponsored by the Danish Music Publishers Society (you can't imagine that happening in a million years in the UK!) and features a distinguished rhythm section of local players. Pianist Carl Winther produced and wrote three of the seven tunes, with one co-written with Bergonzi. It opens with such a blast of virtual avant-garde (‘Gargonzola’) that I thought it had been sent by mistake! But then track two has a gentle medium bluesy groove, with a moody horn line that leads to excellent solos all round. Bergonzi brought in two good originals – the ultra melodic ‘Idiosyncracies’ and the up-tempo 12-bar ‘Elwood’ and there's one by well-known European tenorman Thomas Franck. In fact, everything is beautifully controlled right up to the closing reprise of Winther's fire form opener, with squeals, squeaks and even the odd honk. I would defy anyone, in a ‘blindfold test’, to identify the piano, bass and drums. All three are on a par with the very best in the world. Tracks 2 to 6 are thoroughly recommended. Maybe just skip the other two?
