Dubbed the ‘Trane of Argentina’ upon his emergence in the mid 1960s, Barbieri's fierce, torrid sound, with its abundance of overtones, drew liberally on Pharoah Sanders as well as Albert Ayler. With that in mind, it's hardly surprising that he was associated first and foremost with the ‘New Music’ and his excellent work with such as Don Cherry and Dollar Brand seemed to confirm his leaning towards all things left of centre. This quite stunning album melds the energy of the American avant-garde with latin folk sensibilities in an entirely coherent way. The result is gorgeously yearning melodies, embellished by impassioned soloing from Barbieri and frontline partner, trombonist Roswell Rudd, both of them surfing atop a tremulous but hard grooving rhythm section where Ornette, Miles and Monk alumni – Charlie Haden, Lonnie Liston Smith and Beaver Harris respectively – are on imperious form.
