Harrison holds down the drum chair in Porcupine Tree and King Crimson so knows a thing or three of all things prog. But his questing imagination has led him to this big band re-arrangement of Porcupine Tree songs featuring the cream of contemporary jazz musicians. The éminence grise behind it is Cottle, who's arranging skills have underwritten the extremely long gestation period of the project. But it's worth the wait. The longest, most intriguing cut is ‘Hate Song/Halo’, a mesmerising marimba figure winds above a rock back beat then morphs and swells in a suite of themes that interlock in a dark threnody. Then suddenly we're out and swinging on ‘Futile’ or the title track, with thumping brass choruses like Buddy Rich has taken over the studio. It's all heady, tightly driven stuff and almost a palimpsest of Porcupine Tree as themes and quotes sneak in from various songs. Elsewhere Hitchcock is his usual immaculate self, the flute parts are especially effective but solos are rare throughout as Harrison concentrates on building his big band cathedral of sound.
