Gentle Giant may not have obvious jazz credentials but we ignore their influence on the current jazz scene at our peril. Their unabashed musicality, collaborative ethos, desire to expand musical boundaries, intellectual leanings and sheer joy in complexity underwrite a jazz intent. The collapsing rhythms, stark sax and no little wit of ‘So Sincere’, for example, echoes many sources from Lol Coxhill to Lester Bowie. You'll also hear, wittingly or otherwise, bits of attitude in the contemporary sounds of Get The Blessing or even Led Bib. Their open mindedness in everything from folk to atonal classical music likewise set a template that opened listeners' ears, creating a way in for ‘rock’ audiences to appreciate Miles and beyond. This handsome re-issue may hark back 40 years, but the themes of power and corruption have not aged, sadly, although the music remains fresh. The DVD is not the film the band once hoped for, but includes animations to illustrate the songs.
