Comparing with the recent HighNote release A Million Colors In Your Mind by the younger Cyrus Chestnut, Cables's album shows similarities above and beyond the format and the ‘straight-ahead’ approach. An explicit homage to the late John Hicks is common to both albums, two of his demanding tunes being addressed here along with one by Kenny Barron (‘Voyage’), and the most prominent overlap is the probing drumming of Victor Lewis. In a follow-up to Cables's Icons And Influences recorded less than 18 months earlier (Jazzwise 184), the pianist pays further attention to the repertoire of Ellington and centenary subject Billy Strayhorn, with five tunes between them including ‘Day Dream’ (which is also covered on the Chestnut album). Cables sounds particularly inspired on his own two originals, ‘EVC’ and ‘Mr. Anonymouse’, and while this may seem harsh he does sound more anonymous than Chestnut when leading a trio. But highly competent and energetic, nevertheless.
