Shearing and Canadian bassist Thompson worked together often and decided to record their rehearsal ruminations while they were in the midst of a lengthy duo engagement at a New York club. Having bought pukka recording gear, Shearing responded to Thompson’s suggestion that they lay down some tracks ‘just for fun’ in Shearing’s New York apartment and this album issues some of the results for the first time. At this late stage in his glittering career, Shearing often deployed a rather capricious, knowing approach to jazz improvisation when appearing in public; more playful than profound. Here much of that veneer is stripped away, the playing plainer but no less nimble than expected with Thompson perfect in support. Parker’s ‘Confirmation’ is taking on a helter-skelter ride, the interplay quite intense, while other pieces like the ‘Skye Boat Song’ and ‘I Cover the Waterfront’ receive rather more reflective treatment. Regard this as Shearing in relaxed mode, happy in his work, finding creative things to say on some pretty decent tunes. Four of the 14 tracks are played solo.
