Few labels better define the openness of contemporary jazz than Siggi Loch's ACT, and in turn few projects better define Loch's project than Jazzpaña. Indeed, it was the first project that the label recorded, back in 1992: a happy collision between the leaders of Spain's ‘Nuevo Flamenco’ and US jazz stars such as Michael Brecker backed by the WDR Big Band, it garnered a couple of Grammy nominations and set ACT's agenda to be a platform for ‘Music for people with open ears and open minds. Far removed from a predefined style. Without any fear of mixing genres’. Jazzpaña II followed in 2000, with a different cast of players, including Gerardo Núñez and Chano Dominguez. Those two are linchpins of this third iteration, recorded live last year in Germany. The introduction of Swedish guitar maestro Ulf Wakenius was a great idea, as was the inclusion of Cuban pianist Ramón Valle, who brings fresh Hispanic influences to the mix. It's not jazz-jazz, then – but it is certainly music that will appeal to people with their ears and minds wide open.
