The passing of Geri Allen in 2017 robbed the jazz world of a hugely talented composer-improviser and source of inspiration to many contemporary players. While the Detroit pianist left an impressive catalogue of studio recordings she was also an excellent live performer, and this 2012 concert with star guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel at the well appointed Philharmonic De Paris is a timely reminder of both her compelling individuality and ability to create a dialogue of equals.
Indeed, the artistic empathy between Allen and Rosenwinkel makes this programme of standards and originals a ‘wish you were there’ affair. Their takes on Strayhorn’s ‘A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing’ and Gershwin’s ‘Embraceable You’ are superb for the way they enhance a deeply romantic sensitivity with a number of personal interjections that are by turns subtle and emphatic. Also compelling is the version of Monk’s ‘Ruby My Dear’ while Rosenwinkel’s ‘Simple || 2’ and Allen’s ‘Open Handed Reach’ make clear how well each player can write, with the latter piece having a fine, light as a feather ethereality.
Piano-guitar duos are a relatively rare beast in the history of jazz and if Bill Evans-Jim Hall and latterly Orrin Evans-Kevin Eubanks are among the most notable incumbents then Allen-Rosenwinkel are now an excellent addition to the pantheon.
