The Thrasher Dream trio is pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Ron Carter supported by leader Gerry Gibbs on drums. Their first CD was a well-received romp covering the likes of Herbie Hancock and the back alleys of the standard repertoire. But their second release turns to classic 1960s and 70s R&B for inspiration and adds guests Warren Wolf, Larry Goldings and Steve Wilson. The basic conceit is to give themes from Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind and Fire an acoustic jazz twist and let the soloists speak for themselves. No band with Kenny Barron and Ron Carter at the core is going to sound bad, and with Gibbs a competent and imaginative drummer and arranger, there are lots of good moments to choose from. Carter's lines are a joy in themselves, and, at his best, Barron is in inspired form. Warren Wolf is the pick of the guests, shining on ‘What's Going On’, curling round the melody of ‘Betcha By Golly, Wow’ and soulful on ‘Runnin'’. A pleasant surprise.
