No matter how adept Mulligan's post-Baker quartets were, the fact remains that Mis'tah Chet's shadow still loomed large for many a year. If Bob Brookmeyer's flatulent valve-trombone greatly altered the quartet's sound, likewise the repertoire was revised. Back in the day elements of pre-bop music could be detected when Chet and Gerry were in playful mood. Glad to report humour still abounds as the foursome's collective dynamics openly embrace life affirming Dixieland and swing (in a modern manner) on the likes of ‘Piano Train’ (where Brookmeyer switches to piano), ‘Love In New Orleans’, ‘Jive At Jive’, 'Spring Is Sprung’ (Mulligan takes over the keyboard on this one) and ‘Open Country’ which was famously recorded by the Alex Welsh Band. Better than Prozac and it lasts much longer.
