There seems no end to the posthumous treasures emerging from San Francisco's long-deceased Keystone Korner. This booking was to celebrate and promote the LP reunion of Getz and Joao Gilberto, The Best Of Two Worlds, with what turned out to be a rare live appearance together. Gilberto reprises three vocals from that album including a long ‘Aguas De Margo’ plus the bewitching guitar solo ‘Joao Marcelo’, and sings older favourites such as ‘Doralice’ and ‘Chega De Saudade’. Getz plays on only half these tracks (and the balance isn't ideal), but the rhythmic freedom of Gilberto's singing and playing is something to savour. The album of just the quartet sets is more straightforward, with Getz dominating proceedings but the recently arrived Joanne Brackeen adding much to the established team of Houston and Hart. As well as two tunes the leader had recorded with Chick Corea (‘Con Alma’ and ‘O Grande Amor’, the only bossa), there are a couple of American song standards, plus items from Horace Silver, Wayne Shorter and even Kenny Wheeler. If he tends to make everything sound as if it was expressly written for Getz, that's one definition of what a jazz soloist is supposed to do.
