This is a smart calling card from Italian saxophonist Gianluca Lusi, who comes out of the traps blowing and keeps up a steady stream of melodic invention in a contemporary post-bop vein right to the end of this nine-track, all-originals set. He unwinds lovely lyrical lines on the gentle breeze of a ballad ‘Bavin’, which also serves as something of a feature number for pianist Andrea Rea. But then he produces squalls of sound on the following cut, ‘Isn't A New Day?’ The powerful rhythm section of double bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Gregory Hutchinson frequently find themselves in the spotlight – both take lithe solos on opener ‘October 10th’ and regularly occupy the musical foregound thereafter. The final cut – which is also the title track – finds Lusi in experimental mode, exploring the lower registers of the sax's range. It's a playfully expansive way to round out a tidily impressive release.
