Having missed the chance to catch the trio live in London in April, I'm left with a rather variable, if fitfully impressive, album. As often these days, the technical ability of the players is not wanting, and especially the discreet but soulful bass of Morgan lends some gravitas to the proceedings. Taken on their own, the anodyne versions of two standards, ‘I'm Through With Love’ and ‘Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps’, succeed within the limits of their ambitions. But they seem feeble when measured against the spacey improv of ‘Baiiia’ (with its composed elements credited to Portuguese drummer Lobo) and the energetic ‘The Debate’, which suddenly sounds like the early Paul Bley trio. For the most part, though, the approach has a pulse but with much rubato latitude and, at its least exciting, leads to rather vapid noodling á la Tord Gustavsen. In other words, there's a lot of it about, and this sounds like some of it that might not stand the test of time – in all senses of the word.
