You have to wait until the end of this album before you hear Zaleski's mentor Ravi Coltrane. The tenor saxophonist turns ‘I'm Old Fashioned’ into a spiritual lament and his performance adds heft to what is really no more than a solid trio album, albeit one led by a pianist full of promise. And overall, there's a bit too much emphasis on American songbook familiars. For all Zareski's subtleties, it's mostly been played before. That said, the young Zaleski's spidery runs and confident voicings show all the right influences. Douglas and Weinrib are firmly in the pocket, and Douglas, in particular, has a good sound and is rock-solid in the holding role. The CD opens with a chipper ‘Nobody Else But Me’, continues with a slightly staid ‘Waltz for MD’ and then delivers ‘Make Someone Happy’ as a ballad. Charlie Parker's ‘Cheryl’ is a twist and turn solo showstopper that's well worth a listen, as is ‘Arietis’, a tightly argued and hard-swinging original.
