Global Noize is a musical collective headed by producer and synth programmer extraordinaire Jason Miles (his cv includes Miles Davis, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn and Michael Brecker) and DJ Logic, who are joined on this venture by Indian singer Falu. Global Noize is indeed a global operation, with the music recorded in the US and Brazil, and mixed in Japan. It's also an eclectic mix of musical genres, fusing jazz, rock, ambient, hip hop, funk, techno, latin and world music. Sometimes, mixing together so many genres means you end up with the musical equivalent of a dog's dinner, but that's definitely not the case here. The title track is a sublime number that calls for humanity to come together, but the slinky mid-tempo groove, coupled with Falu's sensual vocals, also suggest a more intimate coupling. ‘21st Century Preacher Man’ is a slab of hard-edged urban funk, while ‘Tokyo Sunrise’ has Andy Snitzer's soprano sax dancing above a mix of bass, beats and electronic percussion. ‘Charismalove’ features Fula's haunting vocals on a song that fuses Indian music and funk, while on ‘Viva La Femme’, Malika Zarra's Flora Purim-like vocals are supported by the harmonica playing of ex-War member Lee Oskar. ‘Natuerza E Paz (Nature and Peace)’ with its catchy latin groove and silky vocals by Brazilian singer Lica Cecato, reminds one of Jason Miles’ work with Ivan Lins and George Duke's Brazilian Love Affair project. If you like jazz that's a little more adventurous, you’ll certainly enjoy this fine album.
