Although the oud is one of the emblematic instruments of the Middle East, it has been deployed to good effect in improvised music for decades, and the Vancouver-based Gordon Grdina, also an impressive guitarist, has emerged as an important exponent over the past 20 years, though the Juno award-winning artist warrants far greater exposure.

This fine new set is one of two current albums - the other being a duo session with German drummer Christian Lillinger – that confirm his ability. While Arabic maquams (modes) are a primary element of the compositions, the combination of string instruments – Grdina’s oud, Hank Roberts’ cello and Mark Helias’ bass – is outstanding, as the blend of light and heavy timbres provides a vivid backdrop for the deeply moving lead vocal of Fathieh Honari while the percussion of her son Hamin, at times discreet, at times dynamic, lends to the ensemble sound a notable additional colour and energy. ‘Raquib’, with its spine tingling overture of pearled melodies set over a stately drone that then takes off into a celebratory dance, is a perfect example of the commanding beauty of this work.

Grdina’s exploration of the riches of non-western music and its substantial improvisatory possibilities continues apace. A notable album from a major talent who should be seen on British stages.
