Though one of the more interesting voices to arise out of the 1960s avant-garde, and a prolific sideman with Archie Shepp, Jackie McLean and others, trombonist Moncur didn't lead too many sessions. Here, however, is an epic suite (released as a double LP), which he composed, conducted and played on. With track titles such as ‘Reverend King's Wings’ and ‘Medgar's Menace’, it's clearly inspired by the US civil rights struggle – and there's an optimistic urgency throughout to match. Seething walls of heavy hand-percussion and whirling maelstroms of furious free-fall repeatedly give way to a catchy bossa bounce with community voices raised high – like an unquenchable hope for the future of race relations in America. Fast-forward half a century and we've got Michael Brown shot to death in Ferguson, Missouri and Eric Garner choked to death by the NYPD. Real change sure is a long time coming.
