The timing of this handsomely packaged collection of Collier's last two un-recorded suites, ‘Luminosity’ and ‘The Blue Suite’ is appropriate not only to mark what would've been the composer's 77th birthday, but also as it arrives just as Loose Tubes reform. That collective grew very much from Collier's workshops (though he must've wondered what monster he'd spawned!) so it's also pertinent that the reformed Jazz Ensemble includes a mix of generations. Alongside Collier stalwarts like Geoff Warren and and Steve Waterman, are fresh voices like James Allsopp and Graeme Blevins. Graced by cover art by Hans Hofmann whose work inspired ‘Luminosity’, and two erudite yet passionate sets of notes from Brian Morton and Michael Rabiger, this CD is an act of love as much as it is a homage and celebration. ‘The Blue Suite’ is Collier's re-imagining of Kind Of Blue, full of signature sounds, the ensemble an improvising entity, mixing jeweled detail with great smears of sound. ‘Luminosity’ is punchier, yet at moments looser, swatches of sound underwriting the balled fists of the ensemble parts. Each suite is deserving of more space than afforded here. A fitting tribute to a master whose influence will persist.
