Originally introduced to Blue Note founders Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff as a talent scout, assistant producer, studio manager and general trouble-shooter, tenorist Ike Quebec was one of the most underrated musicians of the early post-bop years. He played adequate piano and on a good day he turned in some magnificent tenor saxophone solos. Some of those days are captured in this heavyweight repackage of two classic Blue Note vinyl albums, including several previously unissued tracks. His warm, husky tone, expressive on ballads and commanding at faster tempos, recalled Lucky Thompson and Eddie ‘Lockjaw’ Davis, but his laidback brand of swing-to-bop phrasing was unique. Guitarist Grant Green has also seldom played better than he does here. Chordwork was never his strong suit, so he lays out completely behind most of Ike's solos, but his fleet and enviably fluent postbop solo lines swung like magic, especially with Chambers and Philly Joe in support. Tracks like ‘Blue and Sentimental’, ‘Don't Take Your Love from Me’ and ‘Hey There’ are particularly fine. Recommended.
