Once again, hats off to Resonance for their diligent archival research that reaches into places other album researchers fail to find. Slick! comes from tapes made by Green for a Radio CHQM-FM broadcast in 1975. At the time he was without a recording contract and was in the midst of modest crossover experimentation, so we have a soul/funk medley of hits by Stanley Clarke, the Ohio Players, Bobby Womack, Stevie Wonder and the O'Jays. Green, who in his day was a master melodist whose influence extended to the likes of Wes Montgomery and George Benson, had the rare gift of distilling any song he played to its essence and here we hear him spreading his wings in a date just three years before his untimely death at 43 from a heart attack. This is music that will surprise established Green fans because there's nothing like it in his discography, yet his playing remains clean, taut and exceptionally lyrical. The French dates are culled from a three-album vinyl set, the first from the Round House, Radio ORTF's Paris studio on 26 October 1969. It was a time when Green had returned to jazz after battling drug addiction, and capture him at the top of his game, unravelling long lines of masterfully constructed improvisation with deceptive ease. The remaining tracks come from an appearance at the Antibes Jazz Festival on the 18 and 20 June 1970. These tracks, with his set, working band before a live audience add and expand the legacy of his two live Blue Note albums, Alive! from 1970 and Live at the Lighthouse from 1972.
