Wake Up To Find Out – a title referencing the Garcia/Robert Hunter song ‘Eyes of the World’ – is not only one of the most sought-after Dead live sets but the most completely satisfactory jazz gig they ever did. This is a three-CD set of their Nassau Coliseum concert in Uniondale, NY. It stands out as a gig because of the presence of Branford Marsalis. His contributions shine. He makes an entrance on Garcia/Hunter's fragile tribute to Janis Joplin, ‘Bird Song’ – one of the spaciest numbers in their repertoire – and he acquits himself beautifully. With him beside them the Dead are decidedly on their mettle and the ensemble soars. Set two starts with ‘Eyes of the World’ (previously available on Without A Net) but actually the start of an extensive sweep of segued pieces. Marsalis vamps, plays backup, fires off occasional hit-and-run darts. Then he becomes more assertive. Game raised, a wondrous cohesion occurs. ‘Eyes’ swoops into Weir/John Barlow's ‘Estimated Prophet’. Next their keystone vehicle for improvisation, ‘Dark Star’, makes its first appearance, with Marsalis adding strands to the rope bridge between the two compositions. In terms of the Dead's jazz connections, to my mind, there are two luminous collaborations. (And their jazz credentials began with them in their Warlocks' incarnation backing Jon Hendricks in 1966.) There is Garcia's guesting on Ornette Coleman and his Prime Time's Virgin Beauty (1988). Coleman also played live with them, as did David Murray. And there is this Nassau Coliseum concert with Branford Marsalis. Without reservation, hesitation or repetition, Wake Up To Find Out is the stuff to make the heart sing and of dreams.
