Graham Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, has the secondary name Avenue Of Puerto Rico, so living there was just right for the guitarist whose blood is half Eastern European Jewish, half Colombian, and who grew up in Queens. He describes himself as a ‘hybrid musician’ and his music is like that too, blending jazz and latin spices together to deepen the flavour. Mostly the album features the quintet with added percussion on some tracks, and Blake takes Dillard's spot for two. ‘Synesthesia’ sets the latin-tinged tone, with ‘Rastros’ a stately tango for the guest tenor. ‘El Coronel’, named after the character in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years Of Solitude, is a fine example of Diamond's writing, which has that South American way of segueing from melody to linking melody, here stressing the latin, there the jazz. ‘Hint Of Jasmin’ has the gentle, nuanced atmosphere you would expect from that title, while ‘Cascade’ gives Dillard a chance to show his quicksilver soprano flow. Diamond's electric guitar sound is clear and straight, but he leans towards the acoustic in his finger-picking. The band is a highly cohesive one with the accent on creating mood, texture, light and shade, rather than showing off the individual musicians' technical prowess.
