As vocalist Porter embarks on the second phase of his career in major label land the independent that provided him with that all-important first burst of exposure presents something of a summary of the story thus far. Given the immense success that he has enjoyed in the past few years, chances are that most will be au fait with the richness of Porter's baritone and the gospel-infused beauty of his phrasing but the dozen tracks featured here make the point that the singer has been an adventurous and open-minded collaborator in the time that his solo career has taken off. Guest appearances with Zbonics, Brian Jackson's New Midnight Band, Paul Zauner's Brass and David Murray have placed Porter in contexts that reach beyond the soulful acoustic jazz template of his own music. While the work with Murray on his Be My Monster Love album is particularly impressive because the singer is such a natural fit for the church inclinations of the saxophonist's compositions, Porter also sounds good on the zestful remix of ‘1960 What?’ (Opolopo Mix), and in the very funky company of Zbonics.
