Virtuosity for its own sake can be a hiding to nothing, but when two absolute masters of their instruments get together creatively, and in this case bring Brazilian (de Holanda) and Afro-Cuban (Rubalcaba) ingredients into a jazz setting, the results are thoroughly rewarding.

Furthermore, their interaction creates its own sense of ensemble and interpretation. Whether they’re tackling works by Charlie Haden, Stevie Wonder or Maro and John Blanda, not to mention originals by each of them, their work together imposes its own atmosphere on the repertoire.

On Rubalcaba’s ‘Blues Lundvall’ (presumably named in honour of Blue Note’s former president), after some beautifully synchronised stops, he produces some absolutely stupendous runs across the whole range of the piano. But then both of them show almost superhuman fluidity of technique at speed, not least on their instrumental version of ‘Incompatabilidad de Gênois’, though the piece appears again later in the running order with its co-composer Bosco taking a vocal. The other guest on the album is harmonica player Gabriel Grossi, and he brings more than a nod to Wonder on ‘Don’t You Worry ’Bout a Thing.’ But for sheer apparently effortless brilliance and huge fun, no track on the record beats de Holanda’s uptempo composition ‘Flying Chicken’.
