Right from the inception of the Instant Composers Pool in the late 1960s, Dutch improv offered a more playful and theatrical variant to its sterner English and more ferocious German cousins. In contrast to the strictly nonidiomatic aims of other Euro improv outposts, Dutch originators like Han Bennick (who had cut his teeth playing straight jazz with visiting Americans including Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins) were always happy to include affectionate snatches of jazz, blues and boogie if the moment seemed right. It’s an MO that Bennink has never really relinquished – and which permeates these live duets with US pianist Uri Caine. There’s a tremendous nervous energy buzzing through this set, with both musicians’ phenomenal technique (Caine is also a respected classical pianist) manifesting as fidgety, impatient brilliance. Precise Oscar Peterson-like piano vamps bubble up instantaneously from nowhere, Bennick’s lean snare or brush-work ratchet them up a couple of notches of intensity – and then as soon as they’re decisively nailed, they drop away to make room for another nascent high-wire jape. These guys are having a lot of fun.
