Hang Em High is the pseudonym of Tres Testosterones, a lively European trio who share a love of alt-jazz, electronic music and cinema to connect with their audience.
The visual for this latest project is made to resemble the title credit for some imaginary action movie – where the group of desperate musicians kidnap Norwegian keyboardist/composer Ståle Størlokken (of Elephant 9) in the hope that he will assist them in bending the shape of their music in a different direction.
On ‘Chére Madame’ his use of keyboards and electronics provides an undulating sense of menace to the beating soundtrack, while on ‘Toaster Calling’ the squall of Lucien Dubuiss’ bass clarinet intensifies as Størlokken's Fender Rhodes slowly uncoils and squeezes tightly around the composition.
Equally dramatic and daring are the three concluding pieces (‘Free One’, ‘Free Two’ and ‘Free Free’) where Hang Em High turn up the improvisational heat and really start to cook. Shifting from gently chimed resonances to full on bouts of free blowing and electronically manipulated dreamscapes, this final flourish leaves you hungry for a possible sequel.
