This live set is apparently a new discovery, by Italy’s revitalised Red label, and no criticism is implied by suggesting it’s understandable why it wasn’t released nearer the time of its performance. The programme is suitably varied between the occasional original by Jones and an impressive succession of song standards and jazz standards (by Parker, Monk, JJ Johnson, Thad Jones and Joe Henderson – ‘Recorda-Me’ is a tune that Hank also recorded in Copenhagen in 1983).
The contribution of the leader, a key moderator of modern jazz piano, is totally typical and, if you’re not careful, tends to slip by almost unnoticed because it’s always so impeccable.
The surprise, perhaps, is the amount of space given to his colleagues, which underlines Jones’ constant encouragement of comparative newcomers, with Washington (born 1958, 40 years younger than Hank) getting several compelling extended solos. Even the late George Mraz (born 1944), who has a few intonation problems early in the set, is given a lot of space and makes good use of it. For fans of creative trio work, this will prove very admirable.
