There's no better illustration of the mid-1950s explosion of 12-inch LP jazz recording than the output of Mobley and Byrd (and indeed Art Blakey who, though not present here, brought them both to their greatest prominence thus far). Nine months in 1956 saw Mobley produce five albums' worth of material (one released as Introducing Lee Morgan – the other four being reissued in this package) for Savoy and Prestige, and all recorded by the late Rudy Van Gelder, who was by no means confined to working for Blue Note. After his time with Roach and Gillespie, Mobley was already fluent and inventive, able to carry much of the load by himself, which is just as well because Byrd (the most frequent trumpeter here) was at this point a rather featureless Clifford Brown disciple – Dorham on one session, and the brief appearance of Morgan, are far more captivating. Each of the four album titles includes the buzzword ‘Message’, but the memo seems to be: “There's more where that came from”.
