Taking a standard like ‘All The Things You Are’ and finding fresh things to say on the head, and then adding more originality as the piece progresses was child's play for Hank Jones, one of the most consummate pianists in all of jazz. But it is a good way of approaching this release of the second of two nights recorded in a live Copenhagen club setting, as it stands as a yardstick for what this trio would achieve on other material both well-worn and less familiar.

In the latter category Eddie Gomez' sparkling ‘The Bruise’ with its unison passages for Jones and Vinding gets a thorough workout, and so too does Horace Parlan's ‘Arrival’.

On this one Jones displays a very effective trick I recall from hearing him live, which is to play a kind of suspended time over hectic bass and drums for a chorus, giving the effect of leisurely relaxation, before plunging in headlong with the rhythm team at full tempo.

Add to this a very pianistic version of Monk's ‘Ruby My Dear’, Franz Lehar's ‘Yours Is My Heart Alone’ taken some way up from a normal ballad tempo, plus a wildly-swinging take on JJ Johnson's ‘Interlude’, and we have a set of interesting material played with flair and finesse by a trio at the very top of its game.
