These days it’s not widely remembered that smooth-jazz sax amazon Candy Dulfer’s dad, Hans, was a tenor slinger himself. And judging by this slab of single-minded jammage from 1970, he liked things considerably rougher than his pop-friendly progeny. The first of three albums that Dutchman Dulfer made with Ritmo Naturel, a hard working latin rhythm section who had previously backed singer-guitarist Max Woiksi Jr, this is a non-stop rhythmic barrage of extended, one-chord vamps that just don’t want to quit. ‘Green Mountain’ is a heavy soul-jazz banger; ‘Between The Devil And The Blue Horizon’ is a steamy jungle groove; but the standout has to be the title-track, for which Hans and co are joined by axe hero Jan Akkerman, on loan from Dutch proggers Focus, who spits out psych-blues licks that spar and jockey with Dulfer’s altissimo squonks. It sounds like everyone is having a jolly good time.
