Lassen has been around on the Norwegian scene for a while now, but this well-constructed album of contemplative moods is surely his best work to date. It’s very well recorded in collaboration with technician/recording engineer Marcus Forsgren, who is in total alignment with what Lassen set out to achieve, with (among other things) the perfect EQ balance that captures the predominantly mid-range tonal climate this album inhabits.
Subtlety and understatement are the guiding stars here, where electronic and acoustic sounds contrast, unite and dance around each other within compositions that seem to evolve from small beginnings. Each musical episode consolidates, or contrasts, but above all builds, on what has gone before in a series of sepia cameos that both stand on their own as compositions in their own right, yet come together in a unified album statement that works towards an understated album climax of sorts in ‘Impromptu Wonder.’
