Make sure you don’t underestimate tenor saxophonist Harold Land. The perspicacious re-issue duo of Zev Feldman and Cory Weeds, who produced this album in conjunction with the Land estate, sought out Sonny Rollins and Joe Lovano to comment on him for this beautifully-packaged and annotated release: Rollins rated him as among his premier saxophonists of all time, while Lovano said he was equal to Coltrane and Sonny [Rollins].
Best-remembered today for his long-standing and highly productive relationship with vibist Bobby Hutcherson, but less well remembered is his association with trumpeter Carmell Jones, with whom he shares the front line on three key 1962 tracks, a vital musical partnership the memory of which has somehow been claimed by the mists of time. Sadly ‘My Romance’ from September 1964 (like all nine tracks here, recorded at the Penthouse club in Seattle) is the only representation of pianist Hamp Hawes on the album since he leaves you wanting more; while the final dates, on 5 August 1965 with a solid rhythm section of John Houston, Monk Montgomery and Philly Joe Jones, leave you in no doubt that this period in the 1960s Land was in such rich form that New York saxophonists were no doubt relieved he played out most of career on the West Coast.
