All credit to the Ubuntu label, which continues to support acts who may not grab headlines but who explore the less travelled pathways.
Christelis and Velasco don’t set out to rock the world, but the intimacy of their detailed miniatures certainly adds a certain off-beat beauty. Apparently recorded spontaneously in the studio, with no overdubs but plenty of pedals, (no Tour de France puns, please) Scribbling, without in any way diminishing the horrors of the pandemic, also reflects its affordances: the pairing have had time, quiet, a reflective space to explore slowness, harmony, unity but also difference.
As the pair happily acknowledge, they channel plenty of Frisell in his more mediative modes. ‘Charlie’s Dreamtime’ has more than a little of Frisell’s bluesy minimalism: but like their hero, Christelis and Vela don’t so much do less is more than less is spectacularly epic. ‘Time’ likewise, well, stops time, while the arrival of church bells takes us into a different sound world altogether. Of course rabbit holes are mined wherein we all get lost, but the journey rather than the arrival is the fun bit.
