Presenting 12 self-penned songs for which he also wrote the arrangements, this latest from the singer-songwriter offers a little bit of everything. The bluesy vamp of ‘One Fine Thing’, the Getz/Gilberto bossa nova stylings of ‘I Love Her’, the pedal steel guitar, fiddle and accordion that drive ‘Greatest Love Story’, and the New Orleans-inspired ‘S’pposed To Be’ featuring guest vocalist Kim Burrell and trumpeter Leroy Jones, the album’s standout track by a country mile. Other guests include Branford Marsalis who contributes some plaintive soprano sax on ‘Let Me Stay’, and Wynton Marsalis who lays down some fine, late-night trumpet on the reflective jazz ballad ‘Being Alone’. It’s all beautifully played and arranged, but somehow the album never really takes flight. Connick seems to sing well within himself and is strangely muted, with the vocal occasionally getting lost altogether in the bigger numbers.
