This excellent second installment of Different Times, Different Places gives a further insight into the vast achievements of the late South African as both bandleader and bassist. Although the seven pieces are drawn from sessions spread over a five-year period from the late 1970s that saw various changes in personnel there is remarkable consistency in the identity and quality of the work. Miller and Louis Moholo-Moholo provide a kind of ever-rotating rhythmic axis around which the various brass, reeds, piano and guitar liberally twirl, but, as has been the case for much of the music made by the South African exiles on the British jazz scene, the rousing sound of the folk music of their heartland is a dominant thread in the rich tapestry of the performances. The melodies of any number of pieces, above all the closing number ‘Mofolo’ are quite gorgeous, and while an echo of the American avant-garde can be heard on occasion the references are pleasingly wide, meaning that a passing flash of Ornette is often enriched by the jockeying energy of Rahsaan Roland Kirk circa Rip, Rig And Panic.
