Miles may have exhorted us never to look back, but Mason's pulled off a cunning ploy with his splendid Concord debut. It's not called Chameleon for nothing, because Mason has re-visited at least seven songs (and quotes from many others) from his heady days behind Grover Washington, Headhunters and a host of other giants. By pulling in a raft of young guns, the songs are re-percolated with a post hip hop edge that re-imagines them for a contemporary audience. Which may mean ‘smooth’ to some. But who else would dare revive ‘If I Ever Lose This Heaven’? Turner's vox, over a deliriously shimmering beat, would have even Minnie Riperton smiling down from heaven. Not surprisingly, it all climaxes with the title track, that Headhunters classic but now book-ended by Summers' iconic ‘Watermelon Man’ intro. Jazz-funk like you love it, but subtly salted for today.
