Featuring a mix of originals and standards, When First I Saw You There is the debut album from London-based jazz vocalist Helen Burnett. A graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama's MA in Jazz course, Burnett will be familiar to fans of Pete Churchill's London Vocal Project – the singer notes that a career highlight was singing the late, great Kenny Wheeler's Mirrors at Kings Place on her birthday last year. There are some rather fine originals on the 10-track collection, not least among them guitarist, producer and arranger Jo Caleb's folky opener, ‘Lonely Road’, captivatingly sung here by Burnett. Caleb's touching ‘Zara's Song’ is another highlight, with Burnett caressing the tender lyric with telling insight and great tonal warmth. The singer gives Chris Isaak's 1990 alt. country hit ‘Wicked Game’ an engaging makeover, with some terrific Hammond organ work by Ross Stanley. And there's more great Hammond work from Stanley on the Ray Charles song ‘Ain't That Love’, a perky duet between Burnett and guest vocalist Alexander Stewart.
