If you want to make an album that sounds woefully toothless and dated before it's even had a chance to get out of the cellophane wrapper, a sure-fire tactic is to include electronic beats that aim for the cutting-edge but don't quite make it. This project, cooked up by the trio of Nakamura, Werner and Ayabe, describes itself as ‘Sci-Fi Dub Noir’ and, sure enough, you can hear echoes of the Bladerunner soundtrack's late-night drizzle in Nakamura's moodily muted trumpet. But the dub element lets it down badly: stiff, airtight beats that completely fail to grasp the intrinsic otherworldliness of authentic dub. Things appear to be looking up on the languid opening of ‘Frank's Lament’, with a filmic, rain-splashed blues, until sub-DJ Shadow beats splash through the puddles and destroy the tension. Sadly, the vocal cameos don't add much, either: whoever had the bright idea of auto-tuning the living daylights out of the delicately fey voice of Bianca Casady from alt-folk duo CocoRosie needs to have a serious word with themselves.
