Young Horace may well take top billing for this previously unissued live performance (probably from Birdland), but five will get you ten that this was Lou Donaldson's gig. Lou had yet to establish his own voice, so he pootles along merrily in fashionable Bird mode, sadly, Horace's piano is under recorded while the bass and drums sound decidedly ragged. But then this wasn't an organised record date as can be ascertained by the fact that most performances are over extended: for instance, of the seven tracks, ‘Rifftide’ clocks in at 12’10”, ‘I'll Remember April’ and ‘Billie's Bounce’ take 14’ 30” each to complete, leaving ‘Lou's Blues’ to weigh in at a hefty 18’28’’. Maybe it was fun on the night or then again maybe not?
