The musicians gathered together on Egyptian percussionist Hossam Ramzy’s Rock The Tabla come trailing clouds of session glory – Peter Gabriel, Shakira, Sting, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Joan Armatrading, Glen Velez, Joni Mitchell, Bill Laswell, you get the picture – with sundry other awards and hosannas. Of the ‘headliners’, Rahman, Cobham and Katché are to be found on the first three tracks – ‘Cairo To India’, ‘Six Teens’ and ‘Arabantana’ respectively. Cobham also appears on ‘Billy Dancing’ (geddit?). The wind instrument man, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, the fourth banner guest, appears on the final, title track. It’s not that Rock The Tabla is bad – more unnecessary. Put unambiguously, I cannot imagine any circumstances whatsoever under which I would again willingly subject myself to this world music mishmash with an Egyptian flavour.
