The great Bra Hugh might be playing trumpet and flugelhorn in the sky but his legacy lives on – and thanks to this outstanding 3CD set, stronger than it ever was. Masekela was a powerful singer, songwriter and musician who blended jazz, South African styles and music from across the Motherland and eventually assumed his mantle as the ‘father of South African jazz’ with wit and gusto. But back in the 1960s and 1970s, exiled in the States, identifying with black power and antiVietnam protest movement, he created some of the best music of his life. This 47track retrospective contains tracks from some 11 albums, and while diehard fans will play notefornote air horn to catchy signature tunes ‘Grazing in the Grass’ and ‘Stimela’, there's a veritable treasure trove of unheard gems on offer here, some fuelled with righteous anger, others more tricksy and experimental. Two full albums, Masekela Introducing Hedzoleh Soundz (featuring Masekela's collaboration with Ghanaian band Hedzoleh, one of the most original and rocking ‘Afro’ bands of the 1970s), and its follow up, I Am Not Afraid, make this CD set a must have.
